RE: [F_minor] Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata

Dear Mr. Houpt,

Perhaps it is not how he plays it, but how you listen to it. The reason why you do not like this interpretation of the Moonlight is because it is nothing at all like what you feel the Moonlight should be played like. As to the tempo of the first movement, Glenn Gould plays it closer to what Beethoven woul have wanted, based on what notation he left behind. The third movement is marked Presto agitato, and I see nothing that GLenn Gould did diverge from that.

When you say "He opted in the first movement to display a moonlit lake that was in a hurry to get it over with and go back to sleep," you take it for granted that what Glenn Gould wanted us to see was a moonlit lake; perhaps we should search for a new destination, to which he seems to be pointing.
