I've often wondered if Glenn Gould's humming is just a release of the tension that is an inevitable part of performance.? I remember doing the same thing when performing in competitions, but not having the need to do that when practicing at home.
I sat near the stage at a Gould concert at Winthrop College in the early 1960's.? His voice was more noticable in person than in the recordings.? I found it to be a pleasant addition to the music.
