Re: [F_minor] Re: F_minor Digest, Vol 40, Issue 7

Hey f_minor

6000 japanese Yen is currenty 'round 65 USD, 70 CND, 44 Euros or 40 british quid (and 67 CHF for me) = sheer luxury at the moment. It is, however, possible to watch Code 1 DVDs on a Code 2 player and vice versa if you re really desperate , for detailed instructions please visit the archive or send me a message.

Neither Amazon UK, France or Germany currently list those DVDs, Japan has always been a sort of speciality market in terms of GG releases. Let us see what the winter brings just before chrissie, Santa might have something in his bag, I was an awfully good bloke this year...

New topic: GG Collection on DVD

Good news about the GG collection: Sony did release (almost) the entire collection on DVD starting last winter and finished this year. You find every part on japanese amazon, just click "In english" right at the top, type "Glenn Gould Collection" in the search field and select "DVD" from the left menu.

The link to the search results:

At the moment the first 12 parts are available on 6 DVDs (every DVD containing 2 parts). Interesting indeed, that a box set of 6 DVDs (containing the same material) was released, too, that may generate further questions about "what next"? It is not clear what this means: did Sony finished the DVD edition of the collection? If not, why the first 12 parts are released together in a box (instead of 8 DVDs for each package - due that 16 parts were released originally on VHS)?
According to amazon, the DVDs are Region 2 (Europe) and I could not find any of the set on the US Store (which would mean releases in Region 1).
I could not buy the set or any individual part of it, so quality and further details are not available for me.
Every comment is welcome...

Important is at the moment that most of the Glenn Gould Collection is available on DVD.

Best wishes from hungary,

Hello all!

To give a quick reply to the person asking about the new documentary that screened at TIFF this week - Genius Within: The Inner Life of Glenn Gould - I am happy to report that this will likely become the gauge by which we measure the quality of future films about Gould.  It is a brilliant and highly accurate piece of work, in that the many interviews conducted, were done with those who were closest to Gould.  The Foss family is absolutely delightful, and one really gets a sense of ho w much of Gould's public facade was just that.  ; While the film is not just about his relationships with women, namely Cornelia Foss, it does make up a good portion.  And rightly so, because never before have we been able to see this other side of Gould.  There are some incredible pictures AND footage which has never been seen before.  The film does not sensationalize anything or anyone, nor does it perpetuate the myth of him being a recluse who wears winter clothing in the summer.  Gould definitely had issues with being in control, and totally knew what he was doing in creating his own image.  Let's face it, we all still buy into it to some extent.  This film goes beyond that, as I said, and shows us a side that has not yet been revealed.  We need to know this side existed, not to be nosy or anything, but more importantly, to have an accurate conception of who he was and what he was about.  It's a brilliant film and you all MUST see it!  It's worth it for the interviews alone, never m ind the footage.  I particularly liked the interviews with Lorne Tulk, Kevin Bazzana and Pet Clark.  Yes, she's in it too!

On a side note, we were informed that the film will be in theatres across Canada very soon, and also that an American company has purchased the rights to show it in that country.  I believe that company will be announced shortly.  In the US, the film will show in about 30 different cities.  Back here in Canada, a shortened version of the film will air on Valentine's day, on the Bravo! network.  As for when it comes out on DVD, I have been advised by the Estate that it likely won't be for at least another 6 months.  Indeed, something to look forward to!

Best wishes from Toronto!

Thank you Penny for the review. :)

That's really good news...I'm glad they are releasing the film on DVD.  Too
bad the city I live in won't show such a film...

I'm still waiting for Sony Classical to release their GG Collection series
on DVD.  My guess is that it probably won't happen but one can only hope.

Regards, Theresa

I, as other F_minor members and fellow Gouldians, await the release of the GG Collection series on DVD.

Penny: is the GGF active in persuading Sony to do this (as I am
sure there will be many people who would like to have these)?

Also, what about the release of other footage of Glenn Gould on film or video? from CBC? from Sony?
Are they at the Library of Canada? I know there are a slew of tapes there, but any progress on digitizing those tapes and having them available for the public to see?  Be nice to know about any of these endeavors.

Regards,
Katherine
