RE: GG Gathering 99

Certainly the new book "The Art of Glenn Gould" is terrific. And don't miss
the Radio documentaries either. As for pictures, My film needs developing
but if someone can send me instructions I'm happy to put a pic up of the new
statue when I get it. I have one taken by Don Hunstein, who happened to be
passing when I was there.

The gathering was excellent. I think the most interesting sessions were the
one with the Doctors and one with the critics. Also Kevin Bazzana's sessions
in the mornings were fascinating - really really excellent. We also had in
these some very interesting tapes of Gould as a young boy playing amongst
other things, Chopin. These were great.

It was also good to talk to people like Ray Roberts, John Roberts, Stephen
Posen etc etc who had known Gould. I was certainly able to get more
information about matters arising - in the Kazdin book for instance - in
conversation with them.

The videos were great. Sometimes Gould was of course excruciatingly
embarrassing on television but a lot of the stuff was really good. The one
on Fugue and the Toronto programme were particularly good. And the Humphrey
Burton interviews were great of course ["To whom is it a well known fact...
"].

On the drawback side, some people said that the dinner was a bit long and
the speech not very organised, but I was working at the time and wouldn't
have a personal opinion. There was also a little talk about the fact that
there might have been a bit too much "Saint Glenn" about the place. True
there were certainly some (personal) subjects that were never mentioned but
there were certainly people around there who would be a little more real, at
least away from the platform.

All in all, it was a great event, and well worth going to the next one. Full
of very interesting people, beautifully organised by John Miller and his
excellent team and based in a really lovely and interesting city.
