GG: my first time

It's funny how much the "first time" hearing Gould stands out so
much, as if a historical event took place, an event which changes
everything which proceeds it. My guess is, concerning Gould, whether love
or hate him the first time, you were definitely curious, aware that you
were seeing/hearing something quite unique.
My first time was during a university lecture, actually, when my
professor played a clip of that wonderful documentary, Glenn Gould: Off
the Record, by the NFB. Again, it wasn't love at first sight (sound?),
but I was definitely transfixed by Gould's playing, how his body moved,
how he seemed to be in a sort of religious epiphany.
Now, several years later, I am a devoted fan (and still in
university!). His work is very extra-ordinary to me, something other
worldly about it. Indeed, I haven't heard anything quite like his work
since. Listening to him, I don't get the feeling so much of "listening" to
music, but encountering "sound", quite sublime.
It's sad for me to think of how people my age in Canada know
or care little for Gould. Being in Toronto, he is a hero to this city,
sadly being forgotten (even though there's a studio named after him). I try
as much as possible to find other "converts", trying to keep his legacy
alive. The mission is slow, but rewarding.

	regards,

	Eric.
