I think it was Sue Lawley, but Ihavent listened to it for ages

It was indeed. And if I remember correctly, the guest was also ask to
nominate one of the eight that he would take if only one of them was
allowed.He/she was alsoallowed to take a "luxury" (not a human being!) and
one book, apart from the Bible and Shakespeare, which originally were chosen
so often that the programme eventually 'allowed' them without question.

I read somewhere that the actress Hermione Gingold asked for the Albert
Memorial as her luxury, Heaven knows what she was thinking of.

Maybe F-minors would like to nominate their eight choices....How many would
be GG?

This triggers a memory, but I am not sure where I read it....Didnt Canada
have a similar radio programme, and didnt GG once grumble to a friend
because he had never been asked to be the'castaway' ? Because. he said, if
ever there was someone in Canada who could be termed a professional hermit,
it was him!

No doubt someone will tell me if I remeber aright, or if I imagined this.
